When planned and produced correctly, signage helps transform a location into a memorable experience, creating atmosphere and reinforcing a consistent visual identity from start to finish.

A recent project delivered by the Lane Communications team for the City of Unley's Festival of Rice demonstrates how a coordinated signage strategy can help bring an event space to life.

Transforming a Street into a Festival Precinct

The Festival of Rice, held in Unley on Oxford Terrace, is a major cultural and culinary celebration that brings together food, music, entertainment, and community. Raising awareness and excitement for the event required more than a single sign or promotional piece. It called for a comprehensive signage solution that would be visible, engaging, durable, and consistent across multiple touchpoints.

To support the event, Lane Communications produced a wide range of signage and printed materials, including:

  • Vinyl banners for the street
  • Corflute signage
  • Outdoor footpath street decals
  • Custom-shaped freestanding display signage
  • Posters
  • DL flyers
  • Corflute bin enclosure inserts

While each item served a different purpose, together they created a cohesive visual experience for the area.

Why Consistency Matters

One of the biggest challenges for large public events is maintaining a consistent visual identity across different formats and locations. Visitors may first hear of an event through a flyer, then see promotional posters, street banners, directional signage, and wayfinding elements. If each piece looks disconnected due to inconsistent printing or colour shifting, the overall experience can feel fragmented.

Producing all signage elements together, with strict quality control, ensures that colours, branding, messaging, and design details remain consistent throughout the production run. The result is a more professional and engaging experience that strengthens event branding. For community events, festivals, corporate activations, and public celebrations, this consistency plays an important role in creating a welcoming and memorable atmosphere and in connecting with the public.

Managing Complex Signage Projects In-House

Large-scale signage projects involve multiple products, materials, and production processes. Coordinating these elements efficiently is essential, particularly when event promotion dates are set and signage installation deadlines cannot move.

One of the advantages of working with an experienced signage provider is the ability to manage multiple formats simultaneously. By producing signage in-house, projects can benefit from greater quality control, streamlined production workflows, and more efficient turnaround times.

For the Festival of Rice project, multiple signage types were produced concurrently to ensure every component was ready for installation and distribution on schedule. This approach also helped maintain consistency across the entire signage package while reducing the complexity often associated with managing multiple suppliers

Choosing the Right Outdoor Signage for the Environment

Different environments require different signage solutions and outdoor events present unique challenges, including weather exposure, high foot traffic, visibility requirements, and varying installation locations. Selecting suitable materials and production methods is necessary to ensure signage performs as intended throughout the event.

Street banners need to remain visually impactful from a distance. Corflute signage is temporary, so it needs to be budget-friendly, withstand outdoor conditions while remaining lightweight and practical. Decals and display signage need to be durable enough to handle heavy visitor traffic while maintaining their appearance.

By matching the right materials and production techniques to each application, Lane Communications created signage that not only looks great but also performs reliably, leading up to and throughout the event.
